Information Security - History.

Hello there and welcome to my blog.
Let’s start with the definition of Information security.
Information Security is a field of computer science which provides methods and practices in securing the data in all of its forms. Everything you do from watching movies to surfing Internet, is a form of data which needs to be protected.
History of Information security
When ARPANET(What is ARPANET? - Definition from WhatIs.com) successfully came up with using TCP/IP protocol in transferring the data. Two major bodies started using it.
  • Academic Environments. [Open model]
  • Government Environments. [Closed model]
Academic environments had an open network which was open for the public to come to access the resources of it, so people all over the globe could make use of it.
Government Environments had closed network which was not open for public and could only be accessed by inside or people on that particular network.
This system had a major problem. Let’s suppose you bought a house and now you want to allow technician, gardener, plumber but you also want to keep it safe from burglars. Now in this particular scenario, Schools and institutions having an open network will allow everyone including burglars and defense having a closed network will not allow anyone from outside including technician, gardener or the people who are authorized.
So, now the concept of intranets and extranets start involving including VPNs or Virtual Private Networks to provide secure channels from one network to another.
As more companies started doing business, on the internet concepts such as SaaS or software as a service was developed to provide business services over the internet.
With this came the dark side of the internet as well with basic worms and viruses along with the simple exploits and Man in the Middle attack in the decade of 1990.
That’s it, folks. More on this topic coming soon. Hope you have a great day.
